After hits like Badlapur and Bhediya, Varun Dhawan’s latest movie, Baby John, has people excited. The promos, posters, and teaser—playfully dubbed the “taster cut”—suggest that Baby John might be a fresh turn for Varun. In just two minutes, the teaser lays down a lot about the film, offering a taste of the plot’s dark intrigue and hints about Varun's character journey.
Baby John introduces us to Varun's character through the voice of a young girl, narrating a metaphor about ants and elephants. It becomes apparent that this girl holds a special place in Varun’s life, possibly as his daughter, around whom his world revolves. The teaser gives glimpses of two very different looks for Varun’s character, showing parallel versions of him in the past and present. This setup hints at three distinct phases in the storyline: a vibrant, lighter beginning, a gradual descent into darkness, and finally, a fully dark tone as his character’s arc progresses.
Interestingly, Baby John is a remake of Atlee's Tamil film Theri, although it stands as its own story with fresh elements. I haven't seen Theri, but the teaser hints at similarities, such as Varun's character pulling out a baton in a mass-appeal moment that nods to the original.
Jackie Shroff plays the main villain, giving a menacing performance as a character with his own twisted journey, complete with ritualistic actions and shady dealings. There are glimpses suggesting a storyline involving young girls and possibly human trafficking, with Varun’s character, as a cop, stepping in to expose these sinister acts and protect the girls. But it seems things take a tragic turn for him, symbolised by a striking scene of a burning man approaching his character. This failure, or political pressure, appears to push Varun's character to leave the police force.
Seeking a simpler life, he opens a bakery called “Toast on Coast” and tries to enjoy a peaceful existence with his daughter. However, tragedy strikes when her school bus falls into water. Varun’s character attempts to save her but seems to fall short, setting him on a ruthless path of vengeance and self-destruction.
A key highlight of the teaser is its powerful cinematography, especially its use of neon and red lights in dark scenes, which create a thriller vibe that suits the film’s theme. There’s speculation about a possible cameo by a major star, but hopefully, this will be a meaningful addition rather than a mere gimmick.
In the end, the Baby John teaser—or "taster cut"—impressed me with its concept. The idea of a character unfolding through different phases of life, rather than a double role, gives this story a deeper, more engaging touch. If you’re intrigued by Varun’s dark and complex journey, Baby John is a movie you’ll want to watch.
