If you’ve ever walked past Carter Road’s Winter Wonderland and found yourself mesmerized by the rhythmic beats echoing through the festive air, chances are you’ve witnessed the magic of Mohit Gopalani’s students in action. This Mumbai-based drumming dynamo isn’t just a beat-maker; he’s a vibe-setter, a rhythm guru, and the ultimate multitasker.
By day, Mohit is the suave Brand Manager at Furtados Music, passionately representing Mapex Drums, one of India’s most sought-after drum kit brands. By night (and on weekends), he transforms into a rockstar teacher, running his music school, MUSICAL VIBES, tucked away in Juhu. His life is all about rhythm, grooves, and making sure Mumbai’s beats are always on point.
The Beat Goes On: From Tabla to Drum Kit
Mohit’s love affair with music started at the tender age of six, when his curious hands first touched the tabla at his neighborhood temple. It was love at first groove. From there, his journey hit all the right notes—graduating from tabla to drums and eventually mastering an array of percussion instruments like the Djembe, Cajon, Darbuka, Bongo, and more.
“Drums are fascinating,” Mohit says, “You might be the least visible on stage, but you’re the most audible. The power to lead the rhythm of an entire performance—it’s addictive!”
His biggest inspiration? Watching live drummers across genres, from Navy bands to folk musicians. But the real game-changer was meeting Gino Banks, his mentor, who helped him elevate his craft and refine his technique.
MUSICAL VIBES: The School of Rock (and Roll, and Everything Else)
Started in May 2010, MUSICAL VIBES is where Mohit spreads the joy of drumming to students aged 6 to 60—yes, his youngest and eldest students are both women, proving that rhythm knows no age or gender.
Every weekend, the Juhu studio transforms into a hub of creativity, laughter, and a whole lot of banging (the drum kind, of course). Whether you’re a Gen Z looking for your next Insta Reel content or a millennial seeking a stress-busting hobby, Mohit has got you covered.
And the cherry on top? His students have rocked stages across Mumbai, including Carter Road’s Winter Wonderland, earning applause from an awestruck audience.
Drumming: A Lifestyle, Not a Hobby
“Drumming isn’t just about hitting things,” Mohit laughs. “It’s about precision, stamina, and a whole lot of sweat. It’s like going to the gym but way cooler.”
With over 15 years of teaching experience, Mohit’s goal is to make drumming approachable, fun, and deeply satisfying. From the basics of rhythm to advanced techniques, his classes cater to every level, and each session is filled with humor, high-energy, and a sprinkle of life advice.
Notable Moments: From Boman Irani to DRUM-E-BAAZ
Mohit’s journey has been filled with memorable gigs and milestones. Performing alongside Boman Irani for the Uttarakhand Relief Fund broadcasted live on Star Plus was a career highlight.
But ask him about his proudest moment, and he’ll tell you about DRUM-E-BAAZ, a one-of-a-kind event where his students got to perform live on stage. “Seeing them nail their performances was a chef’s kiss moment for me. It’s like watching your rhythm babies grow up!”
The Challenges and Joys of Teaching
Teaching drums isn’t all fun and games. Mohit admits that the music-teaching industry is still niche in India, but it’s growing. “You’ve got to have quality in your teaching and a genuine love for sharing your craft,” he explains.
But the joy of connecting with people from all walks of life—kids, working professionals, and retirees alike—makes it all worthwhile. “Every student teaches me something new. It’s a two-way street of learning,” he shares.
